Mara

1 min read

Mara is a quiet, observant game map developer working at Kacci Lab, where she is part of the team developing and testing Crown & Hearth. Highly experienced with strategy games, she understands the game’s resource systems, settlement development, unit production and map logic unusually well.

Her closest friend and colleague is Ben. The two frequently discuss Crown & Hearth as part of their work and occasionally continue playing or testing builds after hours. Their familiarity with the game means Mara already knows many of its systems instinctively before the events of Villager Zero begin.

Mara lost both parents in a car accident when she was eight and was raised by her grandparents in the fictional Ontario town of Thunderbolt. As an adult, she lives alone and keeps a relatively small social circle.
During a testing session, a sudden blackout and unexplained glitch pulls Mara into Crown & Hearth itself. She awakens inside Settlement 19, no longer observing villagers through a monitor but experiencing their world physically from within.

Her knowledge of the game becomes both an advantage and a problem. Systems that once seemed simple from the player’s perspective now affect real people around her, while Mara must conceal how much she knows about a world she should have no reason to understand.

She later discovers an even stranger complication: an experimental auto-simulation system has somehow become active in the test environment. Although Mara is trapped inside the game, the simulation continues operating under her player identity in the outside world, effectively playing Crown & Hearth on her behalf.

Mara’s growing understanding of what happened becomes central to her attempt to find a way home.
